Née en Bretagne au seuil de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Michèle Sarde a longtemps tu

chassés d’Espagne par les Rois catholiques, s’étaient installés quatre siècles
durant en terre musulmane avec leur religion et leur langue, ce livre est le fruit
d’une démarche littéraire à la fois ambitieuse et originale. Michèle Sarde y

In August 1944, France shook off the German yoke and Jenny dyed her hair blonde.
But who was Jenny? And why did she do it?
The answer takes us on an enthralling story of identities concealed and rediscovered, of
the Jews who fled Spain to Salonika in order to preserve their faith, of women in a
male-dominated community, of settling and assimilation in pre-war France only to be
confounded by the fall of France and the advent of Vichy in June 1940.
Around this seemingly trivial personal anecdote, Michèle Sarde sensitively tells the story
of Jenny, her mother, born in Salonika in 1916. This was a time when many in the Jewish
community there were shaking off centuries of tradition and adopting western customs
and modes of thought.
Jenny arrived in France as a little girl, discovered new attitudes to women’s education,
attended a smart girls’ high school where an extreme right wing, anti-Dreyfusard history
teacher’s star pupils were Jewish girls, among them Dreyfus’ own granddaughter.
Jenny fought to gain her independence in the face of her family’s and community’s
opposition, and helped keep the family together while fleeing across France to escape
the Gestapo and the Vichy police.
Revenir du Silence is a story told on several levels, though the narrative thread
is clear and easy to follow throughout. The author-narrator was a little girl when her
family found themselves in the midst of the Vercors Maquis in summer 1944. It was their
near-miraculous escape that drove Jenny to deny her origins, dye her hair blonde,
and enroll her daughter Michou in a convent for a Catholic upbringing.
But, just like the original Marranos, the Jews of Spain who converted five hundred years
ago but could not long hide their faith, so Michou, late in the story, is forced to confront
her true identity, and in so doing prevails on her aging mother to recount her own story.
Revenir du Silence seamlessly interweaves the personal history of Jenny, Michou
and their Judeo-Hispanic family with acutely contemporary themes of concealed identity,
assimilation and persecution, women’s struggle for emancipation, the German Occupation
of France, all told poignantly, with flashes of dark humour.
Through personal experience and historical findings, it spans the history of a diaspora
from the fifteenth century and the expulsion of the Jews from Spain to 2016, when Spain
enacted its Law of Return allowing their descendants to regain their Spanish nationality.
Though written in novel form, Revenir du Silence is the fruit of eight years’
very extensive academic research in archives and libraries across Europe and the United States.
The events related and people who feature in the book really existed and can be verified.
Booksellers, readers and professional critics in the French speaking world have received
the book enthusiastically, moved by its powerful evocation of people caught in the vice
of tragic circumstances. The story is fast-paced, and the reader is caught up in the tumult
of the times as if in a TV series, with barely a moment to pause for breath.
Revenir du Silence was widely reviewed and commented on, online, on radio, and in the
printed press, in France and Belgium. It also attracted a bumper crop of readers’ letters.

Critics and readers alike laud the literary quality of the writing, the fast, lively
narrative pace, the emotive power (“moving”, “searing”, “poignant”) yet without pathos.
But they also note its moments of humor, and the “absurdity” of certain scenes. Themes
spotlighted include the interweaving of the “minor” with the “major”; personal tragedy
with the tragedy of a whole community; the interplay of individual and collective histories
in people’s survival strategies and in the saga of the Resistance; the pathways of memory—both
